Today’s Verse and Thought
“Just as it was in the days of Noah, so also will it be in the days of the Son of Man. People were eating, drinking, marrying and being given in marriage up to the day Noah entered the ark. Then the flood came and destroyed them all.”(Luke 17:26-27)

Just as it Was in the Days of Noah
After studying the identity of Magog and Gog (from Ezekiel and Revelation) prophecy, one bread crumb took us all the way back to the flood. Noah, to me, is reminiscent of that saying, “All roads lead to Rome” - in our study all roads seem to point back to Noah.
The days of Adam and Eve’s expulsion from the Garden was a pivotal moment in human history. So too were the “days of Noah.” Jesus points back to the time of Noah to illustrate what to look for before the rapture, the Great Tribulation, and His second coming to set up the Kingdom.
“So when they had come together, they asked him, “Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?”(Acts 1:6)
Many churches today don’t teach eschatology (end-times) which ironically may play into fulfilling some of Jesus word’s in this passage.
Jesus speaks to the Pharisees about the Kingdom of God coming in their day. He told them that it wasn’t with “observable signs” (like earthly kingdoms). Instead, it is “within you” (or “among you” in some translations), meaning Christ Himself, as the King, was present among them - in there very midst - yet they failed to recognize Him.(Luke 17:20-21). He was standing right before their eyes, and they were blind to who he was.
Jesus then warned His disciples that soon they would long to see “one of the days of the Son of Man” but will not see it. This wasn’t a prophecy for the first century disciples. It would have futuristic fulfillment when Jesus came again to set up the Millennial Kingdom.
Soon after Jesus ascent, it would seem like the last days and the start of the Great Tribulation as the Roman persecution came and many were martyred. But the time was not yet. It was also a time when “false messiah’s” emerged.
Jesus warned them not to believe these false teachers that were going to come.
“For before these days Theudas rose up, claiming to be somebody, and a number of men, about four hundred, joined him. He was killed, and all who followed him were dispersed and came to nothing.”(Acts 5:36)
Theudas claimed to be a prophet and promised to part the Jordan River - mimicking Joshua’s miracle in Joshua chapter three. The Roman procurator at the time, Cuspius Fadus, crushed his movement, and had him beheaded.
Then another false prophet rose up - an Egyptian.
“Are you not the Egyptian, then, who recently stirred up a revolt and led the four thousand men of the Assassins out into the wilderness?”(Acts 21:38).
A Roman commander had arrested Paul and mistook him for the leader of the Sicarii- a sect of the Jewish Zealots, only more violent. This man led 4,000 Sicarii Jewish rebels and mercenaries to the Mount of Olives, stating that he would make the walls of Jerusalem collapse like Joshua did at Jericho.
That didn’t happen, of course.
“For false christs and false prophets will arise and perform great signs and wonders, so as to lead astray, if possible, even the elect.”(Matthew 24:24)
Roman forces captured and slaughtered the rebels, but the leader escaped and vanished. This false prophet played a major role in the First Jewish Revolt (66-73 AD). The last stand was at Masada (73 AD), where all the remaining Sicarii committed mass suicide (rather than surrender). It’s very reminiscent of Muslim Jihadists today.
“Their name [Sicarii ] comes from the Latin sicarius, meaning “dagger-wielder”. They were famous for their choice of weapon: the Sica. It was a short sword or large dagger commonly used by Illyrians, Thracians, and Dacians.” These groups may have been tied to the Sycthians. (source).
False messiahs will arise, Jesus told them. But when He returns to set up the Kingdom it will be unmistakable - it will be as apparent as lightning flashing across the sky.
But before He sets up his Kingdom, Many things must take place.
First, Jesus had to suffer and be rejected (referring to His crucifixion). (Luke 17:22-25) and then several other things must take place to mark the time of the end.
It was important that the disciples knew what to look for, especially because the general expectation of the Jews regarding the nature of Messiah was wrong.
As we learned in a previous study, the Jews were expecting the Savior to set up a physical government by force, removing the Romans from rule. They expected a political savior, not a supernatural one. They were looking for a King David Messiah, not a King Jesus Messiah.
Jesus told His disciples these things in order to assure them that they were not in the time of the the end. And He didn’t want His followers to be deceived by these false Christs that would arise.
“Children, it is the last hour, and as you have heard that antichristis coming, so now many antichrists have come. Therefore we know that it is the last hour.”(1 John 2:18)
Jesus then further explained what else to watch for. One of the things He used to illustrate the end was “the days of Noah.” Why Noah? Why not the days of Elijah, Joshua, or even King David? Why the days of Noah?
What Was Going on in The Days of Noah?
People were living “normally” - eating, drinking, marrying - until catastrophe struck unexpectedly. Likewise, when Christ returns, many will be caught unprepared.(Luke 17:26-30).
It was very much as it is today. I mentioned the Church above. Today many churches are carrying on business as usual just like in the days of Noah. We have been desperate to get things back to our kind of “normal” ever since 2020.
There are few crying out today that we are living in the end times. Too many recall the days in the past when preachers took to the streets declaring “the end” was near. And, of course, these ministers were always portrayed as crazy.
They are seen as fringe ministers who were trying to stir people up and scare them into salvation (as if that ever worked). There are always going to be extremists. Satan just loves to carry things out to the crazy edges and then create an association to Christianity so that no one dares to tread there again.
Who wants to be labeled as a “Crazy Bible Thumper”?
“The early church didn’t obsess over the end of the world; they focused on the mission of God.” Andy Stanley in the Sermon: “Aftermath,” North Point Community Church, 2020)
“Some people want to talk about the Antichrist and the mark of the beast and all these scary things. But I believe God wants us to live in victory, not in fear.” Joel Olsteen Sermon: “Living Fear-Free,” Lakewood Church, 2018
And of course, all the “prophets” that have risen up over the last 100 years haven’t helped matters. These date setters of Jesus return made a mockery of the Word, so much so that, minsters today just stay away from eschatology all together. Mocking it as fear-mongering.
So it was normal in the days of Noah?
Is that what Jesus was pointing to? Normal?
Or was there something more?
To be continued…
Today’s Question
Today’s Prayer
Father open our eyes today to see the beauty in your future redemption. Help us to focus on what life will look like once you set up your kingdom. Help us not to be afraid of these things. The unknown is always scary, especially when we call it an “ending.” That makes it sound like it will all be over and destroyed. But we know that isn’t the whole story. So I pray today that we can be excited about the day you restore all things. How amazing this life on earth will be when Jesus is sitting on the throne as our KING OF KINGS. Encourage us with the hope that is in our salvation. Encourage us with the peace that comes only from you. Help us to see beyond the fear that some today are trying to push, obscuring the glory that is coming - glory that your Word tells me we will participate in. We long to be in the presence of your glory Father. Help all of us to see that the new Kingdom in your presence is our reward; not a scary punishment of some kind. We know that your children are not appointed to suffer the wrath. May all honor and praise and glory be yours. Amen❤️
